Measuring Quality of Care

Measurement is an important part of any effort to improve quality of health care: you need to know where you’re starting from and whether the changes you’re making are, in fact, improvements.

HQC supports the people who are working to make health care better by presenting information on quality of care in ways that are useful for learning and improvement, and by acting as a resource for those who want to find out more about how to use this information.

    HQC’s role in using measurement to make health care better

    We help those working across the health system – in health regions, the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency, 3sHealth, eHealth Saskatchewan, the Saskatchewan Medical Association, and the Ministry of Health – use information about health care quality to make improvements in a number of ways:

    • By supporting the different measurement activities across the province, and ensuring we are measuring the right things;
    • By working with our system partners to develop ways to measure and report progress toward the short- and long-term goals we have collectively set for Saskatchewan’s health care system through strategic planning;
    • By helping our partners measure and understand the results of continuous improvement activities;
    • By answering questions, coaching, and providing training in how to effectively use measurement for improvement and for decision-making;
    • By staying up-to-date on best practices, and sharing the latest tools and resources related to measurement or using measurement information; and,
    • By showcasing how organizations in Saskatchewan are using measurement to improve the quality of health care for patients and their families.
