The Summer 2017 update from the provincial Emergency Department Waits and Patient Flow Initiative is now available. Inside this edition of the newsletter, you'll find articles about:

  • The new Connected Care approach to delivering better, more coordinated care in hospital and the community, and improved transitions between the two care settings;
  • Saskatoon's Patient First Management System;
  • Collecting data on the needs of Alternate Level of Care patients; and,
  • Videos showcasing use of interdisciplinary bedside rounding on Pasqua Hospital's Unit 4A (Accountable Care Unit), and the Surgery Unit at Moose Jaw's FH Wigmore Hospital.

HQC partners with U of S researcher on studies of multiple sclerosis

As part of its mandate, the Health Quality Council collaborates with researchers in Saskatchewan and beyond to conduct and promote research that can directly impact the quality of health care delivered to Saskatchewan residents. HQC recently contributed to a pair of papers that look at the use of health care services by people with multiple sclerosis, a chronic inflammatory and neurodegenerative disease whose cause is unknown. Both studies were multi-province collaborations, with teams in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, and British Columbia contributing to the research.

Saskatoon Health Region physicians discuss CQIP projects

New videos highlight interdisciplinary rounding on Saskatchewan hospital units

Interdisciplinary bedside rounding (IDR) is a key improvement strategy of Saskatchewan’s Emergency Department Waits and Patient Flow initiative. This “best practice” form of patient rounding has been shown to reduce length of stay, keep patients safer, and improve teamwork and staff satisfaction. A pair of new videos – featuring care teams on Pasqua Hospital’s Unit 4A (Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region) and the Surgery Unit at Moose Jaw’s FH Wigmore Hospital (Five Hills Health Region) show how a variety of different health professionals come together to contribute to a patient’s care for the day and communicate with the patient about that plan.
