Delivering safe, high-quality care: A physician’s perspective on Lean

Posted on Jan 2 2013 | 1947 views

At the Saskatchewan Medical Association Representative Assembly in November, Dr. Thomas Schmidt shared how Park Nicollet Health Services in Minnesota is using Lean to increase patient satisfaction, enhance teamwork, improve patient safety, and reduce costs. Park Nicollet has gone for more than a year without a retained foreign object following surgery, several years without a wrong-side surgery, and had only one fall resulting in an injury in the past two years. They have also used Lean methods to increase the percentage of people with optimally managed diabetes, and reduce the time from arrival at the emergency department to cardiac catheterization, among other improvements.

Dr. Schmidt served as Park Nicollet’s Chief of Patient Care from 2000 to 2006. He still works part-time as Medical Director for Patient Safety and as a consultant with John Black and Associates, the group that is helping bring Lean to Saskatchewan’s health care system.

The video is 1:10:14 in length. We welcome your comments and questions about what Dr. Schmidt had to say.
