Quality improvement program for physicians accepting applications until Oct. 31, 2017

“It has been one of the best learning experiences in my working life.”

That’s how one of the 16 current participants in the Clinical Quality Improvement Program (CQIP) recently described the innovative learning opportunity for physicians. Other participants have echoed that sentiment. As another physician noted, “I have attended several online courses based on the principle of adult learning. This, so far, is the best experience for me.”

CQIP is an 11-month course designed to build capability for facilitating and leading successful health care improvement work in Saskatchewan. The program includes a mix of theory and experiential learning, along with individual coaching and a community of practice for physicians actively working in a clinical context. The first wave of CQIP was launched in January 2017. It will run until November 2017.

Applications are now being accepted for the second wave of the program. The application  process will remain open until Oct. 31, 2017.

CQIP is a sister program to the internationally recognized mini-Advanced Training Program, which was developed by Intermountain Healthcare in Salt Lake City, Utah. Its content has been adapted by HQC for the Saskatchewan health care system.

The program was designed for clinicians who are actively practicing in a clinical context or setting and with physicians as the primary target learning group. However, other clinicians and project support people, such as measurement analysts and improvement specialists, are also welcome to be part of a physician-led team. While participants do not require specific previous quality improvement experience to take this program, some exposure to quality improvement approaches and methods is recommended.

CQIP is for all care settings, including long-term, community, acute, and primary care. While the focus is on clinical quality improvement, the knowledge and skills developed through the program can be applied to a diverse range of improvement projects.

Who should participate in CQIP?

CQIP may be for you if:

  • You want to develop the capability for facilitating and leading successful clinical quality improvement initiatives in your own setting;
  • You want to enhance your ability to effectively support practice, organizational, regional, or provincial initiatives focused on clinical improvement;
  • You wish to deepen your knowledge of measurement for improvement, with a particular focus on variation and statistical process control; and
  • You wish to further develop your ability to lead, nurture, and engage teams in improvement.
