Saskatchewan patients' experiences with hospital care: More information now available online

More information on how Saskatchewan patients feel about the care they're receiving in hospital is now available publicly on a website tracking how the province's health system is performing.

Twenty new indicators* from an ongoing patient survey have been added to the Quality Insight website (www.qualityinsight.ca ) a provincial resource launched by the Health Quality Council (HQC) in mid-February, to give the people who manage and deliver health care in Saskatchewan - and the people who use those services - easier access to information about this province's health care system. The new information includes patients' responses to questions about whether they would recommend the hospital to family and friends, communication by health care providers during their hospital stay, and pain control. It joins other information from the patient surveys, and other measures of health care quality, already available on the Quality Insight website.

Pat Stuart, Vice-president of Quality Management for Prince Albert Parkland Health Region, says her region uses the survey results in several ways. "Over the past year, Prince Albert Parkland Health Region acute care patient experience survey results have been presented at board meetings, the Physician Advisory Council, and the Community Advisory Network," says Stuart. "The data show us where we are doing well and where we need to improve. Releasing Time to Care(TM) teams have used the data to develop strategies to improve the patient experience and the data have also been used to inform the development of the customer service delivery expectations program."

For the last three years, HQC and health regions have conducted an Acute Care Patient Experience Survey that asks patients a range of questions about their experience in hospital. Until now, HQC emailed monthly reports on survey results to each health region and made quarterly reports available publicly on the HQC website. Through the Quality Insight website, results of the ongoing patient survey are now available in one place and will be updated monthly. This gives hospitals and health regions easier access to information that can help them make care better and safer for their patients; anyone can access the Quality Insight website and see the results for each indicator in their own and other health regions, and for Saskatchewan as a whole. Results for individual hospitals and individual wards are also available, where there are enough survey responses to protect the privacy of respondents.

The Health Quality Council is an independent agency that works closely with health regions, providers, and government to make health care better and safer for Saskatchewan patients.

* An indicator is a tool for measuring, monitoring, and comparing important factors that influence the quality of health care - in the same way that the gauges on a car's dashboard show how the vehicle is running. The following 20 indicators from the Acute Care Patient Experience Survey were added to Quality Insight today:

  • Cleanliness of hospital environment
  • Quietness of hospital environment
  • Patient safety communication

Discharge information. This is a composite indicator* which is comprised of results from the following individual indicators:

  • Communication about help available when home
  • Information received about health issues

Responsiveness of staff. This is a composite indicator which is comprised of results from the following individual indicators:

  • Received help as needed
  • Received help to the bathroom as needed

Communication about medicines. This is a composite indicator which is comprised of results from the following individual indicators:

  • Medication information
  • Medication side effects information

Pain management. This is a composite indicator which is comprised of results from the following individual indicators:

  • Pain was controlled
  • Staff helped with pain

Care Transitions. This is a composite indicator which is comprised of results from the following individual indicators:

  • Family participation in care plan
  • Patient preferences in care planning
  • Understand health self management
  • Willingness to recommend [this hospital to family and friends].

* A composite indicator gives an overall indication of how a hospital is doing on an aspect of care and it is usually comprised of two or more single indicators.
